Two IEEE Canada members named to the Order of Canada
Two IEEE Canada members were added to the Order of Canada, Canada's highest civilian honour, announced by Governor General David Johnston on Dec 30 2016. Johnston announced 100 new appointments, including three companions, 22 officers, and 75 members, of which two are IEEE Canada members:
Leonard Bateman
Leonard Bateman (Winnipeg Section), was named a member of the Order of Canada for "advancing the development and distribution of hydroelectric power, notably as the former head of Manitoba Hydro".
Bateman first began working for Manitoba Hydro in 1956 as an engineer. Over the years he rose up through the ranks and in 1972 became the CEO and chair of Manitoba Hydro, a position he held for six years.
During his time with Manitoba Hydro, Bateman was involved with the planning and development of the Grand Rapids Generating Station, the Kelsey Generating Station, the first 120,000-volt loop around Winnipeg and the Churchill River Diversion project, according to the University of Manitoba biography.
Bateman was also responsible for Hydro's first interconnection negotiations with American utilities beginning in the late-1960s.
He was also appointed to the Order of Manitoba in 2003.

John Bandler
John Bandler (Hamilton Section), was appointed an officer of the Order of Canada for his "scientific contributions that have helped to position Canada at the forefront of microwave engineering".
John Bandler is an emeritus professor in the department of electrical and computer engineering at McMaster University, who is also a visual artist, novelist and playwright. He was also the recipient of IEEE Canada A.G.L. McNaughton Gold Medal in 2012. In the same year he was awarded a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.

Two IEEE Canada members won the 2016 NAR Exceptional Service Award
Raed Abdullah (Ottawa Section) and Reza Soleymoni (Montreal Section) were selected as the 2016 winner of the North American Region (NAR) Exceptional Service Award for their great contributions made over years to the IEEE Ottawa Section and IEEE Montreal Section respectively. Congratulations!
The award is presented to a chapter volunteer who has been nominated by their chapter chair.
David Plant was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada
David Plant (Montreal Section), professor of Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at McGill University, was elected as one of 89 new Fellows of the Royal Society of Canada.
David V. Plant is a world leader in photonic devices and systems. His creative innovations have produced record breaking optical transmission performance at multiple length scales ranging from centimetres to thousands of kilometres. His work has significantly advanced the field of optical communications and has contributed to the realization of a more efficient and faster Internet. His results have been commercialized and are being integrated into industrial standards.
Election to the academies of the Royal Society of Canada is the highest honour a scholar can achieve in the Arts, Humanities and Sciences.
