Call for Editor(s) of the New IEEE Young Professionals (YP) Electronic Newsletter

IEEE Young Professionals (YP) is a dynamic affinity group of IEEE members, which promotes a well-balanced professional life and operates around the non-technical aspects of engineering: professionalism, personal development, and community involvement. Before 2014, IEEE Young Professionals used the name IEEE Graduates of the Last Decade (GOLD). IEEE Canada GOLD had a national newsletter called Aurum, which was created to help in establishing a national GOLD identity and to increase national communication among members. The newsletter was published by IEEE Canada GOLD in both English and French from 2003 to 2009. The Aurum issues are available at https://www.ieee.ca/en/young-professionals/aurum/.

IEEE Canada would like to (re)create a national electronic newsletter for the Canadian IEEE Young Professionals that would appear at least twice a year, and is looking for capable and enthusiastic volunteer editors with necessary editorial skills and experience who would like to help with this initiative and serve on a longer term basis, for at least a couple of years. If you are interested in this challenge and would like to contribute, could you please e-mail your CV, a cover letter outlining your skills, editorial experience, and interest in this endeavor, as well as a few relevant samples of your writing to ypnewslettereditors@ieee.ca.

Call for Nominations: IEEE Awards

The IEEE Awards Board administers the highest medals, awards, and recognitions presented by IEEE on behalf of the IEEE Board of Directors. All IEEE members are encouraged to submit a nomination for a worthy candidate within their technical fields.

Nominations are due 15 January annually for IEEE Technical Field Awards (TFAs) and the IEEE Eric Herz Outstanding Staff Member Award. IEEE TFAs are awarded for contributions or leadership in a specific field of interest of the IEEE. The IEEE Herz Award recognizes sustained contributions by a present or past full-time staff member of the IEEE with at least ten years of service.

Nominations are due 15 June annually for IEEE Medals and IEEE Recognitions. IEEE Medals are the highest recognition within the IEEE awards hierarchy, with the prestigious IEEE Medal of Honor as the premier award. They embrace broad and significant contributions within the technical fields of interest of IEEE. IEEE Recognitions reward member's individual contributions to IEEE, published papers, and corporate advancements within the IEEE fields of interest. Recipients of IEEE Medals and Recognitions are recognized at the annual IEEE Honors Ceremony.

Nomination forms and award-specific criteria can be downloaded from:

Since 1917, the IEEE Awards Program has paid tribute to technical professionals whose exceptional achievements and outstanding contributions have made a lasting impact on technology, society, the engineering profession, and humanity. By this means, the image and prestige of the organization, its members, and the profession are all enhanced.

IEEE Industry Tour in Amherst

Aminul Islam, Vice-Chair, PES/IAS Joint Chapter, Canadian Atlantic

A group of young professionals from IEEE Canadian Atlantic Section participated in an industry tour on the Friday evening in October 28th. The group was welcomed at the manufacturing facility of LED Roadway Lighting Ltd. (LRL) in Amherst, Nova Scotia. After a warm reception the group joined an informative session on LRLs' success story, power of innovation and product demonstration. The tour was followed by an extensive walk to the production floor where the IEEE members had a chance to explore the manufacturing process of LRLs' award winning LED street lighting fixtures and smart control products which enables the deployment of smart city network.

The evolution of LED technology is a great example to the young professionals to showcase the advancement of today's lighting technology and the commitment towards building a smarter future. At the end, all participants enjoyed a motivational speech and a group discussion with LRL's Executive Vice President-Operations, Mr. Dave Scott. The event successfully concluded with a question and answer session and educational talk. LRL looks forward to supporting the local section through their social and technical activities in future.

This industry tour was sponsored by IEEE Power and Energy Society (PES) through a member-driven initiative program and IEEE Canadian Atlantic section wishes to organize similar events in the following years.
