Volunteers Needed for IEEE Canada Humanitarian Initiatives Committe

Join our committee! The IEEE Canada Humanitarian Initiatives Committee (HIC). We are looking for new members to join in providing IEEE members in Canada the means to participate in Humanitarian Initiatives. Our focus is in increasing the proficiency of sections in taking-on humanitarian initiatives through the active participation of their members. This can be done by supporting their participation in global efforts (e.g SIGHT, GHTC, ISV) or local activities and projects.

To volunteer, contact Alfredo Herrera alfredo.herrera@ieee.org. We will be hosting information sessions over the web to all showing interest.

4th Annual 5G Huddle in Ottawa

Date: May 31 - June 1, 2017
Location: Ottawa, Canada

On May 31 & June 1 2017, the Wireless World Research Forum (WWRF) will host its 4th Annual 5G Huddle in Ottawa, Canada as part of the celebrations of Canada's 150th birthday, a move which is supported by Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED), Information Technology Association of Canada (ITAC) and the Radio Advisory Board of Canada (RABC). 5G will bring about fundamental changes in the way society and businesses function and how citizens live. It will drive innovation in vertical markets everywhere. But even the most innovative carriers are not expected to use 5G commercially before 2020, and large-scale 5G rollout will most probably take even longer.

With this in mind, the 2017 5G Huddle will focus concretely on the transition from 4G to 5G, i.e. on what needs to be done to lay the groundwork for widespread 5G adoption and ensure that we are prepared to capitalise on the opportunities and benefits ahead. Please visit www.5ghuddle.ch

WWRF had these Huddles on 5G since 2014. The event is supported by ISED, RABC, CWTA and ITAC. The speakers are a mix of Canadian and International speakers. The event is managed by Forum Europe.

WWRF has programme to recognize people who have contributed to developing wireless. In Canada, we have recognized Professor David Falconer of Carleton University on his work of LTE and has been quoted in over many research papers, Mr. Robert Simmonds (formerly of Clearnet fame) and we will be recognizing Mr. Brian O'Shaughnessy, SVP & CTO, Converged Networks, Shaw Communications and Freedom Mobile at our 5ghuddle in May.

Call for Nominations: IEEE Awards

The IEEE Awards Board administers the highest medals, awards, and recognitions presented by IEEE on behalf of the IEEE Board of Directors. All IEEE members are encouraged to submit a nomination for a worthy candidate within their technical fields.

Nominations are due 15 June annually for IEEE Medals and IEEE Recognitions. IEEE Medals are the highest recognition within the IEEE awards hierarchy, with the prestigious IEEE Medal of Honor as the premier award. They embrace broad and significant contributions within the technical fields of interest of IEEE. IEEE Recognitions reward member's individual contributions to IEEE, published papers, and corporate advancements within the IEEE fields of interest. Recipients of IEEE Medals and Recognitions are recognized at the annual IEEE Honors Ceremony.

Nomination forms and award-specific criteria can be downloaded from:

Since 1917, the IEEE Awards Program has paid tribute to technical professionals whose exceptional achievements and outstanding contributions have made a lasting impact on technology, society, the engineering profession, and humanity. By this means, the image and prestige of the organization, its members, and the profession are all enhanced.

IEEE Green ICT Initiative, Greening through ICT Summit & New Young Professionals idea competition

Launched in early 2015 through the support of IEEE Future Directions' new initiatives committee, the Green ICT Initiative's mission statement has been defined as to build a holistic approach to sustainability through information and communications technology (ICT) by incorporating green metrics throughout IEEE technical domains. Current Green ICT Initiative will be hosting the Greening through ICT Summit (GtICT) on October 3 in Paris, France. The theme of the summit is "Sustainability in a connected world". GtICT will be co-located with the IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC), 21-25 May 2017, and the International Workshop on the Application of Green Techniques to Emerging Communication and Computing Paradigms, 21 May 2017.

This new one-day summit will bring representatives of various IEEE Societies to examine opportunities both where ICT is used as a tool to improve environmental and societal functions, and improving the energy efficiency of ICT itself. Its objective will be to identify the combination of key technological, commercial and public policy challenges that must be overcome to achieve sustainability in our increasingly connected world. Additionally, young professionals were invited to participate in the first IEEE Young Professional Green ICT Idea Competition. Focusing on generating new greening ICT concepts and ideas, the competition’s ultimate goal is to both create sustainable ICT and enable transformative change across society. One winner will be selected in three different categories and winners will be invited to attend the IEEE Greening Through ICT Summit in Paris on October 3, 2017.
