Nominations for the Region 7 Director Elect 2004-2005

Nominations for the Region 7 Director Elect 2004-2005 Every second year, IEEE Region 7 (IEEE Canada) elects a new Director Elect. The Director Elect serves a 2 year term, which is followed by a second two year term as Region 7 Director. This year we will elect the Director Elect for 2004-2005. The position also coincides with the position of IEEE Canada President Elect. Nominations for this position are requested.

The candidate must be a Senior Member of IEEE, and should have demonstrated commitment to IEEE through previous active service. This year candidates must be from the Central Canada Council (London, Kitchener-Waterloo, Hamilton, Toronto, Peterborough, and Kingston sections), in accordance with the Regional policy of rotating Directors through the three Councils.

Please send your nominations to Celia Desmond at c.desmond@ieee.org, with a copy to Cathie Lowell at c.lowell@ieee.org, by 14 February 2003.

A busy year begins for the Northern Canada Section

It looks like an exciting year ahead for the Northern Canada Section and its IAS/PES (Industrial Applications Society/Power Engineering Society) and CCSSC (Computer, Communications and Solid State Circuits) chapters.

Northern Canada Section (NCS)
The annual general meeting was held on 23 January 2003 and we were treated to an interesting and informative presentation by James Swanson. James enlightened us on our ‘Cyber Rights’ while using the internet for personal use, business use and commerce. The newly elected executive are:

  • Michael Lawal as Chair
  • Vincent Gaudet as Vice Chair
  • Mrinal Mandal as Secretary
  • Kimberly Hauer as Treasurer

After many years of service we were sad to see that Terra Garneau and Barry Biglow have decided not to continue on with the NCS executive. Terra has been involved with the IEEE NCS for many years and her active participation will be missed. Barry has served as chair of the NCS for the past two years and we will miss his guidance. We hope that they will continue to participate in section events and will remain available to offer us assistance as required.

The NCS has a very ambitious year planned. We intend to send out a member survey to help us gauge the opinion of our membership and allow us to serve them better. We also plan to increase our membership and recruit increased participation in events. Some tentative plans include starting up a student chapter at NAIT (Northern Alberta Institute of Technology), holding a meeting in the Fort McMurray area, planning a conference, and hosting speakers and tours. Another goal is to harmonize the activities of the NCS with those of the IAS/PES and CCSSC to prevent duplication.

IAS/PES
The IAS/PES annual general meeting was held on 21st November 2002. Bruce McClung, an IEEE distinguished lecturer, was brought in to talk about electrical safety. The meeting prompted a lot of discussion and will hopefully remind people of the importance of safety. New executive were also elected including:

  • Angela Antoniu as Chair
  • Samuel Ekpe as Vice Chair
  • Mick Walton as Secretary
  • Dr. Li as Treasurer

The IAS/PES has already held their first organizational meeting and they have many plans for the coming year.

CCSSC
The annual general meeting for the Computer, Communications and Solid State Circuits society is will be held on 10th February 2003 in Edmonton. Stewart Lomas will be speaking about hot new technology that can move big streams of data across a LAN at any speed. Contact Nelson at amaral@cs.ualberta.ca for details. The CCSSC is hoping to fill its executive slate and increase its membership and activities.

IEEE Ottawa Robotics Competition

The first IEEE Ottawa Section Robotics Competition is under way. The competition is targeted to the middle school (grades 7-8) age group. We are seeking both financial and mentoring support.

Each school is to receive a Lego Mindstorms Robolab Kit that includes software and teaching guide. As a sponsor your name can be associated with a kit as well as a sponsor banner will be displayed at the competition.

For more information please visit http://ottawa.ieee.ca/RobotComp2003.html or contact Ramiro at rliscano@ieee.org

IEEE Toronto Centennial

The IEEE Toronto Section was formed on 30 September 1903 as a section of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers. It was the first such section formed outside the United States. Plans for celebrating this unique event are being developed by the current Section executive. Please, bookmark and regularly monitor the IEEE Toronto Centennial Page http://www.toronto.ieee.ca/centennial.htm, where they will post all information about their history and celebration events. If you require any information about the planned activities, do not hesitate to ask Bruno DiStefano at b.distefano@ieee.org
