Attention, Women in Engineering: Canada Calling

Two years ago, the number of Women in Engineering groups in IEEE Region 7 (Canada) was, in round figures, well, zero. Today, after a commitment from the region's director and the tireless efforts of some dedicated volunteers, Canada has nine women's groups and is on track for more. Find out how the region boosted its numbers at http://www.theinstitute.ieee.org/portal/site/tionline/index.jsp?pageID=institute_

IEEE Xplore 2.0

A major upgrade to the IEEE Xplore online delivery platform will soon offer researchers a more functional design, enhanced searching and usability, and an automated welcome page that recognizes users' subscriptions and access rights. The new system will provide subscribers with full-text searching of all content and will enable free, basic searches for all visiting researchers. Another new search option will enable subscribers to focus their search on only the latest content. IEEE Xplore 2.0 will be released early in the second quarter of 2005. For more information on the new features included with IEEE Xplore 2.0, visit http://www.ieee.org/products/onlinepubs/news/0105_01.html.

RSS feeds now available for IEEE Computer Society Journal abstracts

The IEEE Computer Society has created new RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feeds announcing the latest article abstracts from its magazines and transactions. Feeds for conference proceedings will be added soon. The feeds may be read in an RSS aggregator or a Web browser that supports RSS feeds. For more information, visit http://bell.computer.org/rss/index.jsp.

IEEE Computer Society online bookshelf expands to 300 free tiles

Members of the IEEE Computer Society now have unlimited online access to a rotating collection of 300 unabridged technology books. Subjects covered include enterprise computing, graphics and multimedia, hardware, networks, security, software engineering, and more. Larger collections are also available for a modest fee. For more information, visit http://www.computer.org/bookshelf.

National Engineer's week

Engineers Week will focus on initiatives that celebrate the engineering community and share a positive message about engineering around the world. For more information: http://www.eweek.org/.  Part of Engineers Week, Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day, scheduled for Thursday, 24 February 2005, is going global. This is an effort to raise interest in engineering among girls and young women http://www.eweek.org/site/News/Eweek/girlsday_global.shtml.

Researchers unveil portable power supply for wireless devices

A new flexible plastic solar cell that can be woven into the fabric of clothing has the potential to power wireless devices, including cell phones and PDA's. Developed by researchers at the University of Toronto, the technology harvests infrared energy generated by heat -- including body heat -- rather than sunlight, which is temporal, and could be ready for commercial use within five to ten years. For more, visit http://msnbc.msn.com/id/6826186/print/1/displaymode/1098/.

Call for Papers

The purpose of the workshop/conference is to encourage the Canadian electrical industry, particularly those companies and individuals involved with mega projects, to become more engaged with electrical safety, technical advances, codes and standards, and execution of mega projects. There have been significant advances over the past several years in electrical safety and it is important that all involved in the electrical business become engaged in this area. Those wishing to make a presentation at the workshop/conference should submit an abstract to the Technical Chair, Mick Walton at , in Word format. Please see the web site http://www.ieee.ca/safetyworkshop05 for further details.
