Job Fair in Support of Project Youth Energy (PYE)
Members of the Region 7, Hamilton Section Life Members took an active role in supporting Project Youth Energy (PYE) by participating in a Job Fair aimed at engaging students and promoting the benefits of IEEE membership for their career development. They highlighted how IEEE can enhance their academic and professional journey, offering opportunities to connect with peers, benefit from mentorship by experienced professionals, and engage in student branch committees. They also shared with students that by getting involved, students can gain leadership experience, develop organizational skills, and build valuable relationships that will shape their future in academia and industry.
Project Youth Energy (PYE) is an initiative that aims to educate children worldwide, especially in a post-pandemic setting. In 2023, Terry Branch was invited to speak on a panel at the Projects Youth Global Summit of the Worldwide Commission, which brought together representatives from various countries such as Canada, the United Kingdom, the USA, Jamaica, India, Uganda, Hungary, and Montenegro. This event laid the foundation for IEEE's collaboration with PYE.
In January 2024, Elizabeth Galvin, the Director of Project Youth, offered IEEE a complimentary booth at the PYE Job Fair held at the Delta Hotel in Toronto on March 3, 2024. Terry then reached out to IEEE sections in the area, including the Hamilton Section, for support. John Harris and Terry Branch, Life Members of the Hamilton Section, staffed the IEEE booth, with promotional materials provided by IEEE members, such as Murray McDonald from the London Section and Asaf Maruf and Patrick Nkwari from the Hamilton section. The event featured several organizations, with IEEE showcasing its offerings and opportunities to interested students. Photos captured the engaging presence of IEEE's booth at the job fair.
National Engineering Month 2024
As in previous years, National Engineering Month 2024 at the Halifax Central Library on March 2 was a lively event. It was planned and well coordinated by our colleagues at Engineers Nova Scotia. There were lots of displays and a ’Tallest Paper Tower” competition. Many young folks, lead by scouts and guides, took part in the action. Canadian Atlantic Section volunteers Kevin Schwarzer and Dr Mae Seto, together with Section Chair Caleb MacDonald were on hand to promote the IEEE. Kevin Schwarzer built a low-tech, hands-on thermal sensor for the occasion, attracting (almost) as much attention as the hi-tech cube-sat that Dalhousie University graduate students, supervised by Dr. Seto, had on display.
