Ø Our Members in the Spotlight Mr. Svein Fikke receives the Masoud Farzaneh AwardThe third edition of the Masoud Farzaneh Award was held during the International Workshop on Atmospheric Icing of Structures (IWAIS), on September 9, 2013, at St-John's, Newfoundland. This prize, which was established in 2012 by Université du Québec in Chicoutimi (UQAC) in honour of Professor Masoud Farzaneh, a world renowned researcher in the field of power transmission in cold climate regions, is granted to an individual for outstanding contributions to the fields of power transmission and distribution, and high voltage engineering. This year, the prize was awarded to Mr. Svein Fikke, who distinguished himself in the study and mitigation of the impact of weather conditions on overhead power transmission lines. After obtaining his Masters in meteorology at University of Oslo in 1971, he worked for the Norwegian Electricity Research Institute (SINTEF) and mainly for the Norwegian Power Grid Company (STATNETT) in that field. Among his most remarkable contributions are a multidimensional model for the analysis of the transition phases between water and ice in the atmosphere and his elucidation and analysis of the origin and influence of pollution of power lines at high altitude. Since his retirement in 2002, Mr. Fikke acts as consultant for utilities around the world. He has been involved with the Study Committee B2 of CIGRÉ since the late 1980's and has been heading working groups on meteorological aspects related to overhead power lines. He has also been contributing to ISO, IEC, CENELEC and CEN within the same field. He is member of the Norwegian National Committee of CENELEC and IEC TC11.
