Membership Dues in Special Circumstances
IEEE realizes that economic circumstances may impact some members' ability to pay the full amount of IEEE membership dues. For this reason, the following special circumstance categories have been established. Special circumstances are not available to Student members. Only one category may be claimed in any year.
The Latest IEEE Canada McNaughton Centre at the UBC Okanagan campus
The newest IEEE Canada McNaughton Learning Resource Centre was established at the UBC Okanagan campus. The UBC School of Engineering matched the ICF grant and provided space for the centre. UBC third-year student member Emily Landry initiated the grant application, and played a vital role in the establishment and initial management of the Centre. In June 2011, she was awarded by ICF a $5,000 Scholarship for her leadership. The Centre is open to all UBC Okanagan students for facilitating design projects and/or learning about technical topics that strike their curiosity.

HP Canada discount eliminated
Effective 1 February 2012, HP no longer offers an IEEE member discount in Canada.
HP and its marketing partner, Meridian One, advised IEEE they will terminate the member discount offer, because HP is not able to support an inactive account. IEEE members did not purchase through the site and HP therefore withdrew its special pricing. The special pricing for IEEE members was initially offered in February 2010. HP continues to offer a discount in the US, however purchases made from the HP US partner site will not ship outside the US.

2012 IEEE International Conference on Smart Grid
Date: August 27-29, 2012
The Smart Grids are electricity networks that promise to enhance the operational efficiency of nationwide power supply via distributed generation with bi-directional electricity flow. This objective is achieved by allowing intelligent monitoring and control of different components within the distribution and transmission lines as well as other systems from utilities on one side to the end user on the other side, while maintain the power quality, security, reliability and safety with minimum environmental impacts. Governments around the world are investing heavily in this technology to ensure optimum energy use and supply, enable better planning for outage responses and recovery, and facilitate the integration of heterogeneous technologies around the grid, such as renewable energy systems, electrical vehicle networks, and smart homes. Smart Grids present enormous engineering challenges in the design and integration of electrical grid with communication and network technologies, along with substantial questions around required security and privacy of different components within the grid. The SGE'12 conference aims to provide an opportunity to discuss various engineering challenges of smart grid design and operation, by focusing on advanced methods and practices for designing different components and their integration within the grid, and to provide a forum for researchers from academia and professionals from industry, as well as government regulators, to tackle these challenges and to discuss and exchange knowledge and best practices about design and implementation of Smart Grid.
