Topic 1: Multiphysics Method for High-Power Electromagnetics Abstract 1: We are now facing considerably concerns on intentional and non ]intentional electromagnetic interferences (IEMI & EMI) issues related to various communication platforms, which can cause serious degradation in reliability of devices, circuits and systems. In this seminar, multiphysics based time ]domain finite element method will be introduced and implemented for fast capturing transient electro ]thermo ]mechanical responses of various on ]chip interconnects, devices and circuits under the impact of an (I)EMI signal, such as double ]exponential high ]power EMP and electrostatic discharge(ESD), etc. Topic 2: Multiphysics Method for Nanoelectronics Abstract 2: More recently, significant progress has been achieved in the development of carbon nanotube (CNT)- and graphene-based interconnects and field effect transistors (CNTFET&GFET). In order to thoroughly understand signal transmission characteristics of single-, double-, multi-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT & DWCNT& MWCNT) and few-layer graphene transmission lines together with input-output responses of both CENTFET and GFET, we have to take quantum effects into account appropriately. In this talk, multiphysics solutions to various SWCNT, DWCNT, MWCNT, few-layer graphene nanoribbon transmission lines and active devices will be presented, and both frequency- and temperature- dependent quantum effects will be treated in detail. Also, CNT- and graphene-based shielding structures for EMC applications with be addressed and discussed. Montreal Distinguished Lecture
Abstract Abstract 1: We are now facing considerably concerns on intentional and non ]intentional electromagnetic interferences (IEMI & EMI) issues related to various communication platforms, which can cause serious degradation in reliability of devices, circuits and systems. In this scenario, communications gain a central point as a key enabling technology in supporting the "intelligence" of the system. Nevertheless, the area of communications and associated knowledge can even play a greater role, in supporting grid. The seminar aims at providing an overview of the concept and architecture of the Smart Grid, focusing on the contributions of the communications community in terms of communications methodologies. Sample scenarios will be presented to illustrate the relevance of communications in the power grid. IEEE Canada on Facebook!By request a new IEEE Canada Facebook page has been created. The Smart Grids are electricity networks that promise to enhance the operational efficiency of nationwide power supply via distributed generation with bi-directional electricity flow. This objective is achieved by allowing intelligent monitoring and control of different components within the distribution and transmission lines as well as other systems from utilities on one side to the end user on the other side, while maintain the power quality, security, reliability and safety with minimum environmental impacts. Governments around the world are investing heavily in this technology to ensure optimum energy use and supply, enable better planning for outage responses and recovery, and facilitate the integration of heterogeneous technologies around the grid, such as renewable energy systems, electrical vehicle networks, and smart homes. Smart Grids present enormous engineering challenges in the design and integration of electrical grid with communication and network technologies, along with substantial questions around required security and privacy of different components within the grid. The SGE'12 conference aims to provide an opportunity to discuss various engineering challenges of smart grid design and operation, by focusing on advanced methods and practices for designing different components and their integration within the grid, and to provide a forum for researchers from academia and professionals from industry, as well as government regulators, to tackle these challenges and to discuss and exchange knowledge and best practices about design and implementation of Smart Grid.
