Professor Keith W. Hipel, FRSC, FCAE, FEIC, FIEEE, FAWRA will present a lecture: "Competition and Cooperation in Societal and Technological Systems of Systems". The lecture presents an encompassing perspective on competition and cooperation for multiple participants strategically interacting within societal and technological systems of systems according to their underlying value systems as they strive to reach their goals. By appreciating the reality that systems of systems are inhabited by multiple participants or agents having multiple objectives, one can adhere to adaptive and integrative decision making principles to properly design, construct, maintain, and operate systems of systems that serve the interests of stakeholders in a fair and sustainable manner throughout the systems' life cycles. An insightful way is explained for classifying systems of systems in the world according to environmental (natural world), societal (real life), intelligent (artificial life) and integrated (mixed life) systems of systems. To examine strategic behaviour in societal systems of systems, some of the latest contributions in systems thinking techniques are discussed for advancing the paradigm of the Graph Model for Conflict Resolution including modeling value systems, taking preference uncertainty and strength of preference into account, describing how emotions can affect decision making under conflict, and tracing the evolution of a conflict from a status quo situation to a final equilibrium. A real world environmental conflict is employed to illustrate how cooperation among decision makers can produce a more preferred win/win resolution which cannot be reached when they behave independently in a purely competitive manner. In fact, tremendous opportunities abound for researchers and practitioners in systems, man and cybernetics to develop flexible smart systems tools in multiple participant-multiple objective decision making for both cooperative and independent interactive situations to tackle pressing global problems such as global warming, unemployment, globalization of trade, over-population, widespread pollution, poverty, terrorism, and proliferation of nuclear weapons, from a multidisciplinary viewpoint. Keith Hipel is University Professor of Systems Design Engineering at the University of Waterloo, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, and is Vice President of the Academy of Sciences which is part of the Royal Society of Canada. Keith thoroughly enjoys mentoring students and is a recipient of the Distinguished Teacher Award and the Award of Excellence in Graduate Supervision from the University of Waterloo. His major research interests are the development and application of conflict resolution, multiple objective decision making and time series analysis techniques from a systems design engineering perspective. The main application areas of these decision technologies are water resources management, hydrology, environmental engineering and sustainable development. Keith is the author or co-author of 4 books, 11 edited books, more than 200 journal papers, as well as many conference and encyclopedia articles. He is Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada (FRSC), Canadian Academy of Engineering (FCAE), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (FIEEE), Engineering Institute of Canada (FEIC), International Council on Systems Engineering (FINCOSE), and the American Water Resources Association (FAWRA). IEEE Canada on Facebook!By request a new IEEE Canada Facebook page has been created. Please join the group and get involved with discussions taking place. HP Canada discount eliminatedEffective 1 February 2012, HP no longer offers an IEEE member discount in Canada. HP and its marketing partner, Meridian One, advised IEEE they will terminate the member discount offer, because HP is not able to support an inactive account. IEEE members did not purchase through the site and HP therefore withdrew its special pricing. The special pricing for IEEE members was initially offered in February 2010. HP continues to offer a discount in the US, however purchases made from the HP US partner site will not ship outside the US. Here is the link to the first IEEE Canada´s TISP Newsletter, (maintained by Youness Fareh, TISP Canada Webmaster):
IEEE International Conference on CommunicationsDate: June 10-15, 2012 Since 1965 the IEEE International Conference on Communications has been one of the flagship conferences of the IEEE Communications Society. IEEE ICC brings together the world's leaders, scientists, policy makers from industry and academia. The IEEE Ottawa Section is proud to host IEEE ICC 2012 Conference and Exhibition from 10-15 June 2012 where recent advances in the field of communications will be presented. The theme of the conference is "CONNECT o COMMUNICATE o COLLABORATE". For participants it promises to stimulate the scientific exchange of ideas, the identification of future trends in communications, and the illumination of business opportunities. The conference program will feature 12 technical symposia, 16 industrial forums, keynote presentations, several workshops, and tutorials. For general conference information please visit:http://www.ieee-icc.org/2012
2012 IEEE International Conference on Smart GridDate: August 27-29, 2012
The Smart Grids are electricity networks that promise to enhance the operational efficiency of nationwide power supply via distributed generation with bi-directional electricity flow. This objective is achieved by allowing intelligent monitoring and control of different components within the distribution and transmission lines as well as other systems from utilities on one side to the end user on the other side, while maintain the power quality, security, reliability and safety with minimum environmental impacts. Governments around the world are investing heavily in this technology to ensure optimum energy use and supply, enable better planning for outage responses and recovery, and facilitate the integration of heterogeneous technologies around the grid, such as renewable energy systems, electrical vehicle networks, and smart homes. Smart Grids present enormous engineering challenges in the design and integration of electrical grid with communication and network technologies, along with substantial questions around required security and privacy of different components within the grid. The SGE'12 conference aims to provide an opportunity to discuss various engineering challenges of smart grid design and operation, by focusing on advanced methods and practices for designing different components and their integration within the grid, and to provide a forum for researchers from academia and professionals from industry, as well as government regulators, to tackle these challenges and to discuss and exchange knowledge and best practices about design and implementation of Smart Grid.
