Ø Our Members in the Spotlight
Congratulations to David Kemp of the IEEE Winnipeg Section. The citation is `"exemplary leadership and contributions to the IEEE Center for Leadership Excellence, providing a lasting impact and basis for further development". This award consists of a cash prize of US$250 and a plaque.
Congratulations to Sreeraman Rajan of the IEEE Ottawa Section. The citation is `"for encouraging members to connect, communicate, and collaborate at all levels of IEEE and fostering cooperation within Region 7". This award consists of a cash prize of US$250 and a plaque.
At the occasion of the 68th Gala of ACFAS (Francophone association for advancement of knowledge) the prestigious Urgel-Archambault Prize was awarded to Masoud Farzaneh, Professor at the Applied Sciences Department of the University of Québec in Chicoutimi. This event was marked by the presence of the Minister of Research, Science and Technology, Mr. Pierre Duchesne, as well as many dignitaries. The purpose of this prize is to recognize remarkable life-time achievements in physics, mathematics, computer science and engineering.
After obtaining his degree in electrical engineering from Teheran Polytechnical in 1973, Dr. Farzaneh obtained his Masters and then his Doctoral degree in1980 from Institut national polytechnique and Université Paul Sabatier, in France. He subsequently obtained a Doctorat d'État ès Sciences from the same university in 1986. He is presently director of the International Research Center on Icing and Power Network Engineering (CENGIVRE) which he founded in 2003, as well as chairholder of the CIGELE Industrial Chair and the INGIVRE Canada Research Chair on Power Network Engineering. He has also been Director of the Master of Resources & Systems program, Director and Founder of the Master of Engineering program at UQAC as well as member of a variety of decisional committees.
The gala which took place on October 2nd at the Montreal Science Center was a celebration of the excellence of research in Quebec by bringing forward the career of noted researchers. This was the case for Professor Farzaneh, whose research has been focused for the last 30 years on the understanding of the phenomena at the source of the effects of cold climate on power network transmission and distribution systems. The impact of the bulk of his research is such that the whole approach on these issues has been deeply transformed for researchers, engineers, and consultants, as well as international regulatory organizations.
Adam Skorek (IEEE Fellow) was award the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. The new commemorative medal was created to mark the 2012 celebrations of the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II's accession to the Throne as Queen of Canada. The Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal is a tangible way for Canada to honour Her Majesty for her service to this country. At the same time, it serves to honour significant contributions and achievements by Canadians.
During the year of celebrations, 60 000 deserving Canadians will be recognized.

Prof. Skorek teaches at the department of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Québec at Trois-Rivières. He is the 2013 IEEE MGA Awards and Recognition Chair. He is also a member of the Board of Governors of the University of Quebec
Congratulations to Kash Hussein, the IEEE Canada Treasurer, on a well-deserved recognition.

Just as you get regular checkups for your health, teeth, and even your car to minimize future problems, most financial experts recommend that you get an annual life insurance checkup so you're prepared for the future.
Now-during Life Insurance Awareness Month-may be a good time to review the following:
Do you have enough? Do you have enough life insurance to help adequately replace your income and other contributions you make to your family?
Has anything changed in your life? Marriage, divorce, children, job changes, a new home and retirement, among others, can affect your life insurance needs. If something's changed, your life insurance requirements need to change too.
How's the economy impacting you? Economic conditions have probably reduced the actual value of your life insurance. As a rule of thumb, if the cost of living has increased 3 percent since you last purchased coverage, your life insurance should increase by the same amount.
No one wants to think about life insurance and checkups, but we need to if we have loved ones who depend on us. If your checkup shows that you need to add more coverage, you can take advantage of new rate reductions in the popular IEEE Member Group Term Life Insurance Plan. First, the plan's economical base rates were reduced 10 percent. Then, targeted rate reductions (an additional 13 percent for members under age 30; an additional 5 percent for 61-year-old members; an additional 10 percent for members aged 62 - 63; an additional 20 percent for members age 64) make the plan an even better value. Best of all, the plan's recent rate reductions are in addition to the 30 percent premium discount in effect through February 28, 2013.

The 3rd Climate Change Technology Conference (CCTC 2013) is a Canadian and international forum for the exchange of ideas for dealing with climate change. It is also an opportunity to keep abreast of emerging techniques and technologies for the mitigation of, and adaptation to, the impacts of climate change. The Engineering Institute of Canada (EIC) and ten of its member societies are organizing CCTC 2013, which will be held on the campus of Concordia University in Montreal.
The very success of our species has led to a situation in which this planet's finite resources must be considered in all future planning. This conference is dedicated to the study and exposition of the status and prospects of engineering in support of a bright future for humanity in the midst of a rapidly changing and uncertain environment, both physical and sociological due to climate change.
