Ø Our Members in the Spotlight IEEE Canada Section Participation in National Engineering MonthEngineers Canada declared National Engineering Month from Feb. 28, 2011, to Mar. 31, 2011. For a flavour of activities, here is a sample from our sections: Peterborough IEEE Peterborough Section held a windmill building project jointly with the PEO and OACETT on March 2nd at Evinrude Centre. Twenty-two teams of four students each came from Peterborough, Lakefield, Port Hope & Cobourg High Schools to learn the theory and application of wind generators from a professional in the field, design and build their generator, evaluate their design, redesign, test (output varied from one to 171 mW, with speed from zero to over 300 rpm). The media attended and reported on the winners: Subaru Trophy for most Innovative Design IEEE Trophy for Most Efficient Design 1st. Prize, Team 6, Lakefield College (82%) 2nd. Prize, Team 17, St Mary's, Cobourg (78%)
Engineering Month Activity – Ottawa Section IEEE Ottawa Section’s Teacher In Service Program (TISP) Committee joined forces with the All Saints FIRST robotics team to put on a robotics display at the Museum of Science and Technology in Ottawa to celebrate Engineering month. The FIRST robotics team proudly exhibited their working robot. It was truly inspiring to see the small children’s eyes light up when the robot came over to them to pick up the tubes they were handing to it.
The TISP committee exhibited its program and a couple projects using the snap circuits that were suitable for school children. The volunteers had the chance to speak to both parents and teachers that were visiting the museum and told them about the wonderful opportunities available to the schools for children interested in science and technology. Thanks to Janet Davis (TISP chair), Raed Abdullah, the past IEEE chair, Kevin Yoo, IEEE Student Branch Carleton U. and the All Saints Robotics team for making this happen. WIEEE Teacher-In Service Program at the University of Alberta Faculty of Education Technology Fair On March 25, 2011, a group of volunteers from the IEEE NCS section, Mooney Sherman, Jim Ellis, Rossitza Marinova and members of the University of Alberta Student branch, presented during the Faculty of Education Technology in Teaching and Research Fair. The event was held in Faculty of Education at the University of Alberta as part of Engineering month celeberation and Teacher-In- Service Program. This was the first technology fair aiming to become an annual event with the purpose of gathering to celebrate the use of technology in education and to integrate technology into teaching, learning and research.
The IEEE TISP presentation was 50 minutes long. It included an introduction to IEEE as an organization, the purpose of the Teacher-In Service program and the resources available for educators. The presentation was followed by a demonstration of a project on how to design and build a better candy bag. Thanks to all the volunteers, the event went very well. The attendees appreciated the volunteers’ effort; they shared that they believed that such activities should become part of the school curriculum. Toronto Section Forms a New Chapter: SystemsA new technical chapter has been formed - IEEE Toronto Section Systems Council Chapter. Formation of the Systems Chapter has been approved by the IEEE MGA Board on February 19, 2011. The chapter will serve IEEE members by holding meetings at the local level in the fields of interest of the Systems Council:
Systems engineering, education, standards, processes and methodologies Modeling, simulation and integration related to design, testing, production and support Design aspects for robust design, human factors, safety, security and usability Transition of products from design to production, deployment and use Quality control and system management Program/product/project management interactions Risk management Systems architecture and other aspects of multiple disciplines and specialty areas associated with the engineering of systems. Chapter's inaugural event will be held on May 9, 2011 (co-located with IEEE Canada CCECE2011). To register for the event, please click here. Alexei Botchkarev
4th Annual CANEUS/ IEEE Fly-By-Wireless (FBW11) WorkshopDate: June 14 - 17, 2011 The 4th CANEUS / IEEE Fly-by-Wireless conference (FBW11) is targeted to foster collaboration between university, industry and government partners for the research, development and experimental validation of wireless technologies and concepts for next generation of aircrafts and spacecrafts. The FBW11 conference represents a unique and ambitious attempt to bring together the technology developers, end-users and systems integrators involved in fly-by-wireless Aerospace technology development from within the Americas, Europe, Asia and elsewhere. The objective of the CANEUS Fly-by-Wireless Consortium is to minimizing cables and connectors across the aerospace industry by providing reliable, lower cost, and higher performance alternatives for a vehicle's or program's life cycle. The core premise is that complementary skill sets from across several organizations and countries are needed to rapidly and cost-effectively transform emerging FBW concepts into practical Aerospace systems. In order stimulate formation of project teams comprised of technology providers and application/end users, and develop project proposals from each team that have significant mutual benefit and high potential of funding from internal or external organizations, the Concordia University is co-hosting this strategic conference at Montreal on June 14-17, 2011. The 2011 CANEUS Fly-by-Wireless Conference, fourth of its kind, builds on the successes from the 1st Joint CANEUS/NASA 2007 "Fly-by-Wireless" Workshop, held in March 2007 at Grapevine, Texas http://www.caneus.org/fbw/FBW07/, the 2nd CANEUS "Fly-by-Wireless" Workshop held in June 2009 at Montreal, Canada (www.caneus.org/fbw09) and last one took place at University of Maine, Orono, USA (www.caneus.org/fbw10) . The first CANEUS/NASA "Fly-by-Wireless" workshop grew out of an identified need from CANEUS 2006 held at Toulouse, by the CANEUS Aerospace End-User Committee on Aerospace SHM - Structural Health Monitoring. The FBW11 conference will also help advance / refine the projects identified and initiated from previous FBW10, FBW09 and FBW07 workshops. The goal of these past workshops was to significantly advance the CANEUS Fly-by-Wireless Consortium by creating roadmap and articulating well-defined projects for the aerospace industry. The workshop will culminate in measurable deliverables, namely a set of project "blueprints", for developing the most promising FBW concepts to system-level prototypes. The cut-off date for papers and posters submission is April 17th, 2011. Website: http://www.caneus.org/fbw11 International Conference on Autonomous and Intelligent SystemsDate: June 21 - 23, 2011 The 2nd International Conference on Autonomous and Intelligent Systems (AIS 2011) is held in conjunction with the 8th International Conference on Image Analysis and Recognition (ICIAR 2011) in the beautiful city of Burnaby on the outskirt of Vancouver, Canada. It aims at providing a platform for researchers, engineers, academics and industrial professionals to present their recent research work and to explore future trends in various areas of autonomous and intelligent systems. The conference will address recent advances in theory, methodologies and applications in the ever growing field. The scientific program will include distinguished keynote and invited speakers and fully refereed contributions that will be published in a special volume of the Springer Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence. It will be indexed in major indexing databases. Selected articles will be considered for publication in the Int. Journal of Robotics and Automation and in the Int. Journal on Control and Intelligent Systems, among other journals. AIS 2011 will be organized into four tracks, with the list of technical areas in each track given below.
