London Section: The Story of Electronic

Thursday April 28th, 2011, 5:30-7:30pm, Lambton Residence, Lambton College, Sarnia, ON

This seminar will screen the film "the Story of Electronics" which champions product take back for waste electronics and encourages companies to make less toxic, more easily recyclable and longer lasting products. Produced by Free Range Studios and hosted by Annie Leonard, the eight-minute film explains 'planned obsolescence'-products designed to be replaced as quickly as possible-and the often hidden consequences for workers, the environment and the rest of us.

Speakers: Since 1990, Mary Jean O'Donnell, President of MJ Waste Solutions, has worked with corporations, educational institutions as well as federal, provincial and municipal governments to develop successful waste minimization and diversion programs. The primary business driver for MJ Waste Solutions is encouraging clients to pursue "zero waste". In 2004, Ms. O'Donnell co-authored the first municipal zero waste plan in Canada, a "Zero Waste Action Plan" for the City of Nelson.

Workshop on Connecting Engineering Applications and Disaster Management

24th Canadian Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering - IEEE/CCECE 2011
May 8-11, 2011, Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada

Minimizing the risks and consequences of large-scale disasters is a key concern for a green future. Green future is also related to continuous human and social development and, therefore, working to minimize risks and consequences of unexpected large-area harmful events (e.g., forest fires, ruptured oil lines after an earthquake). The increasing complexity and interdependence of critical infrastructures demand more interdisciplinary initiatives. These have the potential of supporting disaster management by bringing technological and operational innovations to bear.

The primary aim of the workshop is to promote an interdisciplinary forum for researchers and practitioners to discuss technologies and integrated solutions in all phases of disaster management: from prevention (e.g., risk mitigation) and protection (e.g., preparedness) to response and recovery. This workshop will open the door for further initiatives and collaboration related to engineering applications for disaster management.

Submissions from academics, consultants, and practitioners are strongly encouraged. Detailed information and the list of topics to be covered can be viewed on http://publish.uwo.ca/~acunha3/cedm.htm.

Important Dates:
Abstracts must be received by: Friday January 21, 2011
Notification of abstract acceptance will be sent out by: Friday January 28, 2011
Full length paper must be received by: Friday February 18, 2011

4th Annual CANEUS/ IEEE Fly-By-Wireless (FBW11) Workshop

Date: June 14 - 17, 2011
Location: Concordia University, Montreal, Quebec, Canada

The 4th CANEUS / IEEE Fly-by-Wireless conference (FBW11) is targeted to foster collaboration between university, industry and government partners for the research, development and experimental validation of wireless technologies and concepts for next generation of aircrafts and spacecrafts. The FBW11 conference represents a unique and ambitious attempt to bring together the technology developers, end-users and systems integrators involved in fly-by-wireless Aerospace technology development from within the Americas, Europe, Asia and elsewhere.

The objective of the CANEUS Fly-by-Wireless Consortium is to minimizing cables and connectors across the aerospace industry by providing reliable, lower cost, and higher performance alternatives for a vehicle's or program's life cycle. The core premise is that complementary skill sets from across several organizations and countries are needed to rapidly and cost-effectively transform emerging FBW concepts into practical Aerospace systems.

In order stimulate formation of project teams comprised of technology providers and application/end users, and develop project proposals from each team that have significant mutual benefit and high potential of funding from internal or external organizations, the Concordia University is co-hosting this strategic conference at Montreal on June 14-17, 2011.

The 2011 CANEUS Fly-by-Wireless Conference, fourth of its kind, builds on the successes from the 1st Joint CANEUS/NASA 2007 "Fly-by-Wireless" Workshop, held in March 2007 at Grapevine, Texas http://www.caneus.org/fbw/FBW07/, the 2nd CANEUS "Fly-by-Wireless" Workshop held in June 2009 at Montreal, Canada (www.caneus.org/fbw09) and last one took place at University of Maine, Orono, USA (www.caneus.org/fbw10) . The first CANEUS/NASA "Fly-by-Wireless" workshop grew out of an identified need from CANEUS 2006 held at Toulouse, by the CANEUS Aerospace End-User Committee on Aerospace SHM - Structural Health Monitoring.

The FBW11 conference will also help advance / refine the projects identified and initiated from previous FBW10, FBW09 and FBW07 workshops. The goal of these past workshops was to significantly advance the CANEUS Fly-by-Wireless Consortium by creating roadmap and articulating well-defined projects for the aerospace industry. The workshop will culminate in measurable deliverables, namely a set of project "blueprints", for developing the most promising FBW concepts to system-level prototypes.

The cut-off date for papers and posters submission is April 17th, 2011.

IEEE Canada TISP 2011 Workshop

Hopefully, you will know by now that the Region 7 Teachers-In-Service-Program (TISP) has set Thursday and Friday, April 28 and 29, 2011 as the dates for our Biennial Workshop in Toronto. We are anticipating about 75 IEEE attendees from all across Canada, plus selected guests from the science teaching community.. It has been suggested that Section Chairs (or an alternate) from the six Ontario Sections should attend it they possibly can. Other members from your section should also be encouraged to join in. Note that the workshop organizers are prepared to pay the cost of the one over-night's stay at the hotel, plus reasonable traveling expenses. You should also note that the Region 7 Board Meeting has also been set for the same hotel on the overlapping dates of April 29 and 30, 2011. These dates have been deliberately selected to permit members from both groups to mingle together for informal "get acquainted" sessions at breakfast and lunch on April 29. The hotel has kindly arranged to set aside a section of their main dining room for our exclusive use for this purpose.

Attached to this message is the official "Flyer" for the event, which sets out a brief summary of the proceedings. At the lower left hand corner of the flyer, is a box enabling you to register for the meeting. The registration form also makes clear the reimbursable expenses which the organizers are prepared to accept.

Cut-off date for registration is April 7, 2011, but please do not leave it until the last minute.

The attached Flyer lists Lynn Bowlby in Piscataway as the contact person for additional information.
