Message from IEEE President: 2006 Membership Drive
Dear Colleague:
I have the distinct pleasure of serving you as the 2006 President of IEEE. Today I am writing to ask for your help and participation in the 2006 drive to help increase our membership.
The foundation and strength of the IEEE is a strong and growing base of members. IEEE does not have a professional sales and marketing force for membership. Rather, we depend on word of mouth to communicate our organization and that means you. To continue to grow and build the IEEE, we need your help. Here's what you can do.
Participate in the Member-Get-A-Member program. This program is available with incentives for finding new members. You will get a $5.00 credit voucher for every member that you recruit. But the real reward is more than a credit voucher. It’s a stronger, better IEEE with enhanced connections into industry and the community. These connections help to build the IEEE Network that supports our careers and the profession.
There are many tangible benefits associated with membership: career and professional development tools, discounts on products and services (both technical and non-technical), the award-winning Spectrum magazine, reduced conference registration fees, multiple opportunities to network with the leaders of the field, access to top technical information, an ever increasing number of continuing education courses, and much more. The list continues to grow each year. In 2005 we launched a members-only web portal, myIEEE. This portal puts all your membership benefits together in one, easily-accessible place.
In 2006 you will see the launch of IEEE.tv, which, through streaming video, can place conference presentations, technical seminars, and other items of general interest directly on your desktop. We also have plans to launch a new, online member directory to help our members get in touch, and stay in touch with each other.
With all of that, I thank you for maintaining your membership in IEEE this year and hopefully in the future. I also urge you to recommend IEEE to your colleagues and co-workers. Please direct your colleagues to http://www.ieee.org/join to become a part of the IEEE Network. Remind them that if they join between now and 15 August 2006, they can join for just one-half the normal dues rate.
This is your organization. Help us to grow it and to keep it as vital and vibrant in the future as it has been in the past. Thank you for your participation in the 2006 Membership Drive.
Very truly yours,
Michael Lightner, Ph. D.
President and CEO

IEEE Canada - TELUS Innovation Award
Canadian researchers have and are continuing to greatly contribute to the advances in Electronics, Computing, and Communications Technologies. Today, fields like Nanotechnology and Photonics as well as interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary subjects are gaining in importance in the development of new engineering ICT solutions. TELUS Communications Incorporated wishes to stimulate the interest of Canadian IEEE student members in these fields by sponsoring the annual IEEE Canada TELUS Innovation Award. The first such awards were presented in September 2005 and this year the finals will be held in Toronto, as part of the annual R7 IEEE Student Congress.
The purpose of the IEEE Canada TELUS Innovation Award is to offer IEEE student members the opportunity to engage individually or as a team in a significant ICT project. The project would have a strong design and/or research component with the emphasis on design that "embodies the spirit of innovation" and has strong application in industry in the foreseeable future.
Up to $20,000 in cash awards plus travel and accommodation for qualifying teams is generously being funded by TELUS Communications Incorporated. The deadline for nomination submissions is June 1, 2006. More details are available on the IEEE Canada student web site at http://ewh.ieee.org/reg/7/students/telus_award/index.htm or by contacting Janet Bradley, R7 Student Activities Chairperson, at janbee@ieee.org

IEEE Toronto Chapter Chair Sridhar (Sri) Krishnan was recently presented with this year's New Pioneer Awards Science and Technology award. After receiving his Engineering degree in India, Sridhar Krishnan came to Canada in 1994 to pursue at the University of Calgary. Within five years he not only had adjusted to a new system of education and a new culture, but also had made his mark as an outstanding research student and acquired a Ph.D. Today as the Chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and an Associate Professor, Sridhar is the youngest Chair for an ECE Department in Canada and is a major player in transforming Ryerson University from a primarily undergraduate institution to a full-fledged research university. He is an active volunteer for the IEEE and founded the International Conference for Upcoming Engineers (ICUE).
The 19th Annual IEEE Canadian Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering will be held May 7-10, 2006 in Ottawa, Ontario
CCECE is an annual conference for university, industrial and government delegates to exchange their ideas on research and disseminate their results and experiences in the field of electrical and computer engineering. The conference is the major IEEE event and flagship conference in Region 7 (Canada) which was established in 1988. Since then the conference has been held in Vancouver, Montreal, Ottawa, Quebec City, Toronto, Halifax, Calgary, St. John's, Waterloo, Edmonton, Winnipeg and Niagara Falls. The 2006 Conference will take place in Ottawa, Ontario, for the second time in its history, after 16 years.
CCECE will host DRDC Workshop - Signal and Information Processing for Defence Applications and several tutorials, including Modeling and Optimization for High-Frequency Electronic Design, Recognition in Video, Processing, Protecting and Providing Multimedia Information, etc.
This conference is being arranged in conjunction with the CCC 2006 conference Climate Change Technology Conference by the Engineering Institute of Canada.
This year, CCECE's annual conference will host the IEEE's fourth annual Ottawa Robotics Competition. The goal of the competition is to expose students in Grades 7 and 8 to engineering. 18 teams from 11 different schools will compete in a junior and senior challenge. The challenge: To build a robot with Lego in just nine weeks. Hussein Mouftah, the general conference chair will give opening remarks at the competition. IEEE International Symposium on Electric Insulation
11-14 June 2006
Delta Chelsea Hotel
Toronto, Ontario
This symposium is a biennial conference for the electrical insulation industry and is a premier international forum on insulation technology, with invited keynote speakers to overview trends and developments for the future, followed by a series of practical presentations from scientists and engineers active in the field of electrical insulation. This conference will be the sixteenth in the series. ISEI originated in Montreal in 1976 and, after the three last meetings took place in the US it is returning to Canada once again. The emphasis of the conference is on practical aspects of electrical insulation materials, measurements and applications.
Howard Sedding, Chair ISEI2006: "Over the past few months, the Technical Committee has been extremely busy with the moiré than 200 abstracts submitted for consideration for presentation at the Symposium.
The final program contains over 140 contributions on all aspects relating to the latest advances in electrical insulating materials, measurements and applications. Reflecting the international aspect of the symposium there are papers from researchers in 23 countries.
Consequently, I strongly urge all of you whether in the manufacturing, industrial, utility and academic sectors to attend ISEI 2006 not only to keep abreast of the exciting developments in the science and engineering of electrical insulating materials but to renew old acquaintances and meet new ones."
