News of InterestIEEE Launches Revamped WebsiteThe IEEE website this month underwent the first of several planned enhancements intended to make the site a more valuable resource for members, the technical profession and the general public. The initial updates, which are based on both user comments and Web best practices, include additional search capabilities, a refreshed design, shorter URLs and a migration toward a more streamlined navigation. Check out the new site at: http://www.ieee.org/ Student Built Instrument Embarks on Mission to PlutoThe first student-built device to be selected by NASA for a planetary mission is scheduled to launch on a journey to Pluto next week. The Student Dust Counter (SDC) created by students at the University of Colorado at Boulder will gather and analyze dust grains from space. The student team plans to use the device to identify previously unseen and ancient clumps of particles from the dust disk of the solar system. The SDC detector is comprised of a thin, plastic film resting on a honeycombed aluminum structure mounted on the outside of the spacecraft. Once tiny dust grains make contact with the SDC, diverse electrical signals will be generated, allowing the students to determine the mass of each particle. Oak Ridge researchers say they have developed materials for thin-film lithium batteries that withstand temperatures from below freezing to 250°C (480°F), which makes possible different product designs, including soldering the batteries into integrated circuits to power microelectronic devices. Researchers say they are working to make thin film lithium power sources smaller, lighter and more flexible. Meyer, author of a new IEEE-USA eBook. Titled "The Reliability of the Electric Transmission Infrastructure in the 21st Century, An Analysis of The Energy Policy Act of 2005," the eBook provides a detailed discussion of the key provisions of the first comprehensive U.S. energy bill signed into law since 1992.
