IEEE Canadian Foundation: IEEE Canada Women In Engineering Prize 2005

After careful consideration by the full Board of Directors, the IEEE Canadian Foundation has agreed to award the IEEE Canada Women in Engineering Prize for 2005 to Jennifer Jessop of the Winnipeg Section, as nominated by Jeff Blais.

This Prize is awarded to a female IEEE Canada member who received her first professional degree within the last ten years and who is active in IEEE activities - value $500. This year, 2005, is the first that the Prize has been awarded.

Congratulations Jennifer!

IEEE Canada Telus Innovation Competition

IEEE Canada and Telus are sponsoring an exciting new award competition: The IEEE Canada Telus Innovation Award. The winning team will take home a $10,000 prize in a national competition to be held in September in Vancouver.

This competition is open to IEEE student members who are completing or have recently completed their final year project. IEEE Canada student members in their final year (2004/2005 academic year) of an engineering or technology program at a Canadian undergraduate institution (University or College) are invited to enter a significant Information Computing and Telecommunication (ICT) Technologies project for which they are receiving education credits. The best project in Canada will earn its creators a $10,000 prize in a national competition to be held this coming fall in Vancouver. Individuals or teams of up to five are encouraged to submit a written report about their project to their IEEE Student Branch. Branch Counselors are to submit their nominee to the Regional Competition no later than 1 June 2005.

Please see http://www.ieee.ca/students/telus_award/index.htm for further information and for the registration form.

IEEE Job site has RIM postings

The IEEE Job Site has more than 100 new job postings from Research in Motion (RIM). RIM is an internationally recognized leader in wireless technology, and creator of the popular and revolutionary BlackBerry (tm) wireless platform and handheld product lines. RIM is no stranger to innovation and entrepreneurial spirit and they are looking for individuals who have that same drive to take wireless technologies to the next level. Whether you are a recent graduate, or someone with experience, they can help unleash your career today. Check out the current RIM job postings at http://careers.ieee.org/js.php?lookid=ieee by entering RIM in the Search Keywords box. IEEE PES International Student Prize Paper Contest

This contest is sponsored by the IEEE Power Engineering Society to encourage students in their professional development, to stimulate interest in the problems of the electric power industry, to encourage preparation of quality technical papers under faculty supervision, and to give recognition to the schools and faculties that provide guidance in these areas.

The competition is based solely on judging of written papers related to the electric power industry. The choice of suitable topics is limited to the following:

  • Renewable energy sources
  • Alternative power generation
  • High-reliability power generation, transmission, and distribution
  • Energy-efficient power generation and distribution
  • New technologies for power generation, transmission and distribution.
Papers may discuss engineering theory and/or applications. The applicability to the power industry should be adequately presented in the paper. The content of the papers may be broadly interpreted but each paper must fit into at least one of the topic areas cited above. Papers that primarily emphasize other areas will not be considered (this represents a recent change made by the granting organization). Primary criteria in judging papers will be technical quality and written presentation.

Electrical Safety, Technical and Mega Projects Workshop

The purpose of the workshop is to encourage the Canadian electrical industry, to become more engaged with electrical safety, technical advances, codes and standards, and execution of mega projects. Specifically, there has been significant interest demonstrated in publicizing and discussing both the successes and lessons learned with respect to the electrical industry from both a safety and technical perspective in relation to their involvement with mega projects. In addition, there have been significant advances over the past several years in electrical safety and it is important that all involved in the electrical business become engaged in this area.

This Workshop is not a training course, but a forum for exchanging ideas and practical
experiences involving knowledge, work practices, electrical safety and technology that are changing the electrical discipline in industry. Targeted audiences include but is not limited to people involved in electrical in these areas of interest:

  • Facilities construction, operation and maintenance
  • Facilities and process design
  • Inherently safer products and equipment
  • Electrical safety services
  • Training and continuing education
  • Regulations, codes and standards
  • Forensics
  • Risk management
  • Workplace safety
  • Human error and human factors

IEEE Virtual Museum launches exhibit on electronic instruments

The IEEE Virtual Museum has launched its latest exhibit, "Songs in the Key of E," which explores the numerous ways electronics have been used to create music. With examples such as the singing arc, the theremin and the synthesizer, among others, the exhibit highlights both the inventors of electronic instruments and the instruments themselves, and uses audio clips to demonstrate the various sounds. Aimed at pre-college students and their educators, the IEEE Virtual Museum explores the global impact of electrical and information sciences and technologies to demonstrate how relevant engineers are to society. Visit the IEEE Virtual Museum at  http://www.ieee.org/museum.
