IEEE launches membership portal
The IEEE has launched its new membership portal along
with a members-only area called myIEEE. The public site boasts the value and
benefits of IEEE membership while showcasing the availability of additional
membership opportunities, such as Societies, Affinity Groups and the Standards
Association. Links to member-benefit information are consolidated into drop-down
menus on the top navigation bar. Also included are a "Featured Benefit" module,
member profiles, membership-related announcements and more. Members who login to
the myIEEE area with their IEEE Web account will see personalized information,
such as their grade, section affiliation and additional active memberships. A
new feature called "Service Advisor" uses a member's technical interest profile
to offer recommendations for IEEE membership offerings, conferences and
publications. Links to the most commonly-used membership-management functions -
joining the IEEE, renewing membership, adding services and changing profile
information - are included in a single module for easy access.
The membership portal and myIEEE project was initiated in response to member
feedback about the IEEE Web presence, as well as to improve communications about
the value of IEEE membership. The portal is accessible from the Membership menu
on the left navigation bar of the main IEEE Web site. The URL is
http://www.ieee.org/myieee.

IEEE personal email alias blocked nine million viruses in 2004
Users of the IEEE Personal Email Alias were protected from more than nine and
a half million viruses in 2004, the IEEE Electronic Mail & Security Services
department reported. This is more than five times the viruses blocked the
previous year. The service, a free benefit of IEEE membership, provides an @ieee.org
email address while forwarding email to your real inbox. The Alias scans all
incoming mail for viruses, and also comes with optional tools to block
unsolicited commercial email. For more information on the IEEE Personal Email
Alias, visit http://www.ieee.org/alias.
Employment postings on IEEE job site more than double in 2004
Job listings available to IEEE members through the IEEE Job Site more than
doubled in 2004, jumping to more than 5,000 jobs compared to 2,346 in 2003. The
site also put programs in place to expand job listings around the world. For
more information on the IEEE Job Site, or to sign up, visit

New electromyography guidebook provides interpretive insights
A new title from Wiley-IEEE Press explains the essential concepts needed to
detect, understand, process, and interpret EMG signals using non-invasive
electrodes. "Electromyography: Physiology, Engineering and Non-Invasive
Applications," by notable researchers Dr. Roberto Milletti and Dr. Philip
A. Parker, generates practicable insight into physiology, medicine and
biomedical engineering. For more information, or to purchase this
ready-reference guide, visit

IEEE press book first to examine automotive black box debate
Thomas M. Kowalick has been in the center of the international debate over
the use of "black box technologies" for more than seven years, and has been
a key player in the IEEE-SA Global Project 1616: Motor Vehicle Event Data
Recorder Standard. Now, Kowalick brings his expertise to the first and only
book on the subject, "Fatal Exit: The Automotive Black Box Debate," now
available from IEEE Press and John Wiley & Sons. The book briefly traces
the history of the debate from 1974 to 2004, and presents opposing
viewpoints for and against the widespread use of emerging Motor Vehicle
Event Data Recorder (MVEDR) technology. For more information, or to
purchase this title, please visit

Hot off the press: Ad-hoc networks guide
From algorithms to 4G wireless, a new title from Wiley-IEEE Press assesses
the challenges and imperatives of ad-hoc networks. "Mobile Ad-Hoc
Networking" is a collaborative guide co-authored by experts in the field
and features key insights into IEEE 802.11 protocols, performance and open
issues; antenna beamforming; scatternet formation, and more. For additional

New book details delta-sigma converters for first-time users
A new book from Wiley-IEEE Press, "Understanding Delta-Sigma Data
Converters," details real-world operations of Delta-Sigma converters to
generate insight into industry applications. Authors Richard Schreier,
winner of the Outstanding Paper Award at the 2002 IEEE International
Solid-State Circuits Conference, and Gabor C. Temes, recipient of the 1998
IEEE Graduate Teaching Award, contextualize the uses of first-, second- and
higher-order delta-sigma modulation using the Delta-Sigma Toolbox, a
design-oriented software. Learn more about this title at

New book provides insight into tunable laser diodes
Tunable laser diodes, characterized by their unique ability to "tune in" to
different wavelengths, thus significantly improving the efficiency of the
switch, are rapidly becoming key components for advanced optical
communication. "Tunable Laser Diodes and Related Optical Sources, Second
Edition," a new book from IEEE Press and John Wiley & Sons, covers the
range of optical networks and the components they require, with emphasis on
tunable lasers. Written by respected experts in this groundbreaking
technology, this resource covers fundamentals not only of tunable laser
diodes, but also modern laser diodes in general, from theory to
applications. To purchase this book or find more information, visit

New Wiley-IEEE press title assesses power systems reliability
In a new book from Wiley-IEEE Press, IEEE Fellow Wenyuan Li applies
real-world examples of planning, operation, maintenance and asset
management in the utility industry to theoretical concepts, methods and
procedures. "Risk Assessment of Power Systems: Models, Methods, and
Applications" applies both the Monte Carlo and analytical evaluation
methods to calculate risk quantitively, determine factors that reduce risk,
and justify an acceptable level of risk. Preview the first chapter of this
