Canadian Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering 2003
The Canadian Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering (CCECE) was
established in 1988 and the first conference, CCECE’88, took place in Vancouver,
BC, 3-4 Nov. 1988. At that time, the CCECE was sponsored by the Canadian
Society of Electrical and Computer Engineering (CSECE). In 1995, CSECE merged
with IEEE (The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) Region 7 to
form IEEE Canada. Since then, CCECE has been the annual flagship conference of
IEEE Canada. The major objectives of the CCECE are:
- Fostering interaction and networking in the electrical and computer
engineering R&D community coming from Canadian universities, industries and
governments;
- Serving as a "political" platform for leaders, thinkers and decision
makers in industries, government and universities, who are asked to give
plenary sessions; and
- Providing a venue for presentation of major IEEE Canada awards.
The next version of the conference, CCECE’03 will be held in Montreal during
the period 4-7 May 2003. We are expecting an attendance of about 500 delegates,
consisting mostly of researchers from Canadian universities, industries and
government. At CCECE’2002, some 20% of the delegates were from overseas, reflecting an international presence.
There will also be a Life Member information desk at the CCECE Conference.
Arthur Yelon, a Montreal Section Life Member, and Ron Potts, LM Chapter Co-ordinator,
will be at the desk on 5 & 6 May, and will be available to discuss LM activities.
IEEE Circuits and Systems society fellows listed
Members of the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society (CASS) included in the IEEE
Fellows class of 2003 have recently been announced. Fellow is the highest grade
of IEEE membership and recognizes unusual distinction in the profession. Read
the list of CASS Fellows

IEEE Members save when adding new publications and societies
Current IEEE members can receive up to 50% off full-year rates when adding
new IEEE Societies or IEEE publications to their memberships between now and
August. All new subscriptions begin immediately and continue through the end of
the calendar year, making this the best time of year to try a membership to a
new IEEE society or subscribe to a new publication. For a complete list of
options, or to add new services, visit
http://www.ieee.org/addnewservices.
New service supports IEEE while you shop at Amazon.com
A new service called Shop Amazon.com at IEEE allows visitors to the IEEE
Web site to support the Institute while they shop at Internet retailer
Amazon.com. Shop Amazon.com at IEEE offers selections from Amazon.com's
everyday low prices on books, CDs, electronics and other items, and also
includes links to search and shop their entire product line. Every purchase
made through Shop Amazon.com at IEEE helps support IEEE initiatives by
generating a royalty directly to IEEE. Shop Amazon.com at IEEE can be accessed
through the IEEE home page and at

IEEE Press offers guide to semiconductor devices
The basic components of the integrated circuit are examined in the revised
edition of the handbook, "Complete Guide to Semiconductor Devices" by Kwok K.
Ng. Claiming that semiconductor devices are responsible for rapid industry
growth over the past five decades, Ng makes the argument that these devices are
and should be constantly studied, improved and reinvented. Find out more about

New book on wavelets in Electromagnetics and device modeling
Professor and Director of the Electronic Packaging Lab at Arizona State
University, George W. Pan has authored a new book, "Wavelets in Electromagnetics
and Devise Modeling." The book, billed as the first book on this subject, delves
into topics such as orthogonal wavelet theory, canonical multiwavelets, and the
sampling biothogonal time domain method (SBTD). For more, visit

Hands-on approach to facts technology feature
New Wiley-IEEE Press volume titled "Thyristor-Based FACTS Controllers for
Electrical Transmission Systems" covers the emerging technology of static
reactive power compensators and their key relationship to flexible AC
transmission systems (FACTS). Authors R. Mohan Mathur and Rajiv K. Varma use
case studies and examples to discuss design and performance of this important
part of today's power transmission systems. Mathur brings 20 years of research
to his work on this volume. Varma is a Fullbright Scholar with significant
teaching and research interests that include FACTS and power-system stability.
