News of InterestCSIDC 2003 WinnersAn international panel of experts has selected the winners of CSIDC 2003, the IEEE Computer Society 4th Annual International Design Competition. The teams were selected from a group of more than 150 that participated in the CSIDC 2003. The top twenty-five projects were selected based on their reports by twenty-three Submission Evaluation Teams. The Judging Panel met 16-17 May 2003 and selected the top ten projects from this list of twenty-five. The winners of CSIDC 2003 are:
Congratulations to the team from DeVry! For more information, please visit http://computer.org/csidc/CSIDC2003Winners.htm Leonard Bateman invested into the Order of ManitobaIEEE member Leonard Bateman was one of eleven citizens invested into the order of Manitoba on 15th July 2003, Manitoba Day. This is the highest honor that Manitoba can bestow on one of its citizens. Mr. Bateman is a Graduate Electrical Engineer from the University of Manitoba. He also has a Masters Degree from the same university. He has post graduate qualifications in Engineering and Business Administration. His career involved service with both Winnipeg Hydro and Manitoba Hydro, and for the last twenty-four and one-half years, has been President of his own company - Bateman & Associates Ltd. He has made many contributions to various professional bodies, including serving as President of the Manitoba Association of Professional Engineers and as President of The Canadian Electrical Association. He has been active in International Professional Groups and served a six-year term as Chairman of the CIGRE Study Committee on HVDC Transmission Lines. When he was appointed to chair this prestigious international committee, it was the first time that a Canadian had been elected to chair a committee of CIGRE. He has also served as President of the Canadian National Committee of CIGRE. During his six-year term as chair of the Canadian national committee he invited the Administrative Council of CIGRE to meet in Winnipeg. It was their first meeting in North America. They have not returned since. He is a recipient of the Association of Professional Engineers' of Manitoba Merit Award, The Canadian Council of Professional Engineers' Gold Medal, and the Queen's Twenty-Fifth, and Fiftieth Anniversary Medals, as well as numerous other awards including an Honorary Life Membership in the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of the Province of Manitoba awarded in October 2000. Product Safety Engineering becomes 38th IEEE societyThe IEEE Board of Directors has established the new IEEE Product Safety Engineering Society for 2004. This brings the total number to 38 societies and four technical councils. An IEEE society is made up of individual IEEE members and affiliates interested in a specific area of technology. More information on the new Society will be available soon; for more information on IEEE societies, please visit http://www.ieee.org/societies. IEEE Board announces new journals for 2004The IEEE Board of Directors has approved five new technical periodicals for publication in 2004. Included are: IEEE/ACM Transactions on Computational Biology and Bioinformatics; IEEE Distributed Systems Online; IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Letters; IEEE Transactions on Automation Science and Engineering; and IEEE Transactions on Dependable and Secure Computing. All will be available through IEEE Xplore and various IEEE online collections. More information on these journals, including how to subscribe, will be available soon. For more information on IEEE publications, please go to http://www.ieee.org/products/periodicals.html. Free abstracts now available on IEEE XploreGuest users of the IEEE Xplore (R) online delivery platform can now access free abstracts to all online articles, and current subscribers can utilize new linking features to make research faster and more efficient than ever before. Version 1.5 of IEEE Xplore, which powers the IEEE Member Digital Library as well as IEEE online collections for institutions, was released this month with the following enhancements:

To start using these new features, visit IEEE Xplore http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/ Call for Papers - ISCAS 2004The 2004 IEEE International Symposium on Circuits and Systems will be held in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, on May 23-26, 2004. The Symposium is sponsored by the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society. Papers are sought from all areas of the Circuits and Systems Society, including:
Only electronic submissions and correspondence via e-mail will be accepted. Authors’ schedule: More information is located at http://www.iscas2004.org. Senior Member UpgradesThe following members were upgraded to Senior Member status at the June 2003 Admission and Advancement Panel meetings in Nashville, Tennessee:

IEEE Commercial ReleasesBook aims to assist medical professionals in analyzing medical imagesIntelligent processing of multi-dimensional images has become crucial in conventional or computer-aided interpretation for radiological and diagnostic applications. "Medical Image Analysis," a new book published this month by Wiley-IEEE Press, focuses the in-depth knowledge of the modalities used to acquire images for medical image reconstruction and processing to assist medical professionals in effectively selecting and developing the most appropriate image reconstruction and processing methods for accurate analysis and interpretation. The text discusses such topics as the interaction of the basic unit of imaging in a biological environment, formation of a quantifiable signal representing the biological information, detection and acquisition of the signal, and appropriate image reconstruction. New Wiley-IEEE Press book offers help with computer simulationsEngineers hoping to solve problems by using computer simulations may find some of the answers they need in "Complex Electromagnetic Problems and Numerical Simulation Approaches," a new book from Wiley-IEEE Press. Author Levent Servgi offers a look at both observable-based parameterization as well as numerically computable forms. The book comes with a companion FTP site. For more information, or to purchase, visit http://www.wiley.com/remtitleinternational.cgi?isbn=0471430625. Emerging Nanotechnology focus of new IEEE Press bookNanotechnology is the focus of "Future Trends in Microelectronics: The Nano Millennium," a new book on microelectronics edited by Serge Luryi, Jimmy Xu and Alex Zaslavsky. The book from Wiley-IEEE Press makes the case that the evolution of this technology, acknowledged by the U.S. government as one of the top areas of emerging technology, presents an unprecedented opportunity to impact the future of the world. This volume offers a collection of articles based on ideas raised during the summer of 2001 at the third meeting in the Future Trends in Microelectronics (FTM) workshop series. Find out more about this new book at http://www.wiley.com/WileyCDA/WileyTitle/productCd-0471212474.html. Book analyzes dynamic performance of interconnected power systemsThe Wiley-IEEE Press publication "Power System Control and Stability" studies the characteristics of the many components that make up a power system under normal and abnormal conditions. The book looks into detailed mathematical models of system components and studies the system behavior using the necessary computational tools.
