Canadian Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering 2003

The Canadian Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering (CCECE) was established in 1988 and the first conference, CCECE’88, took place in Vancouver, BC, Nov. 3-4, 1988. At that time, the CCECE was sponsored by the Canadian Society of Electrical and Computer Engineering (CSECE). In 1995, CSECE merged with IEEE (The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) Region 7 to form IEEE Canada. Since then, CCECE has been the annual flagship conference of IEEE Canada. The major objectives of the CCECE are:

  • Fostering interaction and networking in the electrical and computer engineering R&D community coming from Canadian universities, industries and governments;
  • Serving as a "political" platform for leaders, thinkers and decision makers in industries, government and universities, who are asked to give plenary sessions; and
  • Providing a venue for presentation of major IEEE Canada awards.

The next version of the conference, CCECE’03 will be held in Montreal during the period 4-7 May 2003. We are expecting an attendance of about 500 delegates, consisting mostly of researchers from Canadian universities, industries and government. At CCECE’2002, some 20% of the delegates were from overseas, reflecting an international presence.

There will also be a Life Member information desk at the CCECE Conference. Arthur Yelon, a Montreal Section Life Member, and Ron Potts, LM Chapter Co-ordinator, will be at the desk and will be available to discuss LM activities.

Volunteer mentors for Earth Day Solar Sprint Race needed

Earth Day Ottawa has run a model solar car race for grades 6 - 8 students in the Ottawa region for the past two years. Students build a shoe boxed sized car of their own design, powered by a solar panel and motor that Earth Day Ottawa supplies. This year's race will be held 31 May at the Science and Tech museum. Earth Day Ottawa is looking for 8 volunteers for mentoring school teams. The volunteer mentors are expected to meet with the students at their schools about every 2 weeks from now till race day. Their job is to explain the engineering principles involved, and help the students brain storm and trouble shoot. They are not to design the car(!) tempting though that is! Volunteers receive lunch and a t-shirt on race day, a token gift, and a memorable experience. For more information please contact Branislav Djokic, Chair of Educational Activities, IEEE Ottawa Section at branislav@ieee.org. For photos of past events visit http://www.earthdayottawa.cyberus.ca and go to Solar Sprint..

IEEE Security & Privacy Magazine now available

The first issue of IEEE Security & Privacy Magazine, one of three new IEEE periodicals launching in 2003, is now available online in IEEE Xplore. While the focus of IEEE Security & Privacy is information technology, the magazine also covers the evolving relationships of computer security to transportation, financial, commercial, military, health care, energy and other critical infrastructures. IEEE members and institutional subscribers with appropriate online access rights can view all of the articles from the magazine's first issue through IEEE Xplore. If users' access rights do not include this publication, access to individual articles can also purchased. Visit  http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/xpl/RecentIssue.jsp?puNumber=8013.

IEEE Members have options for accessing technical info online

How many different ways can IEEE Members access technical information online? Many more than they may be aware. There are a variety of options for members to consider when they conduct their research, whether it be patent or article research, competitive intelligence, syllabi creation or any other research task.

  1. First, as a benefit of IEEE membership, all IEEE members are entitled to search and view abstracts of all articles in IEEE Xplore. When a member locates an IEEE article within IEEE Xplore they would like to purchase, they can now do so instantly. Members may purchase an IEEE document through IEEE Xplore for $13 per article. Non-members pay $35. For more information visit http://www.ieee.org/ieeexplore
  2. For other research materials, such as IEEE documents or other publishers' papers, IEEE members may access the electronic or print files at a discount through the IEEE document delivery partner program, Ask*IEEE. For more information visit http://www.ieee.org/services/askieee
  3. Finally, IEEE Members who conduct frequent online research may choose to subscribe to the IEEE Member Digital Library, which offers access to more than 329,000 papers from IEEE journals and conference proceedings published over the last five years. For more information, visit http://www.ieee.org/ieeemdl.
