News of InterestIEEE Announces 2002 Branch website contest winnersThe winners of the 2002 Student Branch Web Site Contest are Boston University, United States (first place), the Student Branch of Padova University, Italy (second place), and Universidad Distrital Francisco Jose de Caldas, Columbia (third place). The contest recognizes outstanding IEEE Student Branch web pages that convey the IEEE message in a concise and creative manner. Other criteria include ease of loading the page, navigability and overall presentation. Runners-up included Curtin IEEE Student Branch in Australia, University of California-Berkeley IEEE Student Branch, DeVry Institute of Technology at Calgary IEEE Student Branch, Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, Rowan University, Grand Valley State University and the University of Southern California. IEEE Canada Vehicular Technologies Bursary 2002The Vehicular Technologies Conference ’98 generated a surplus. A part of it
was presented to the IEEE Canada Board of Directors with the stipulation that
the funds be administered to the benefit of students. IEEE Canada will
distribute a part of the interest of this surplus as the “IEEE Canada Vehicular
Technologies Bursary”. The bursary will be awarded to support IEEE student
members of Canadian (IEEE Region 7) Universities or Colleges who wish to attend
and present a paper at a Vehicular Technologies Conference or other IEEE
Conference related to Vehicular Technologies. Each travel subsidy will be up to
50% of actual travel costs, based on submitted receipts in accordance with the
current IEEE Canada Travel Expenses Guidelines, up to a maximum of $1500 per
student, per calendar year. More than one bursary could be awarded per year, but
the total amount should not exceed $1500 per year.

Induction of new members into the Canadian Academy of EngineeringPresident Joseph Wright, FCAE, today welcomed 25 new members into the Canadian Academy of Engineering. The ceremony took place in Ottawa, in conjunction with the Academy’s Annual General Meeting 2002. “This prestigious group of new inductees represents a significant addition to the membership of the Academy” said Dr. Wright; “they will assist in further raising the profile of the engineering profession in Canada, and its essential role in ensuring the well-being of the economy, the public and the environment”. The new members are:
IEEE Foundation now accepting grant proposals for 2003 and beyondThe IEEE Foundation is currently accepting grant proposals for projects in 2003 and beyond. Projects for consideration must improve math, science, and technology education; recognize and celebrate engineering achievements; or preserve and promote the history of electrical and information technologies. The deadline for proposal abstracts is 19 August with full proposals due 30 September 2002. The IEEE Foundation will review proposals at their November 2002 meeting. For more information about the process and full instructions, visit: http://www.ieee.org/organizations/foundation/html/funding.html. CAS Society offers free society membership to active IEEE membersThe IEEE Circuits and Systems Society (CAS) is offering free 2002 society memberships to current IEEE members. Included in CAS membership is a subscription to the quarterly Circuits and Systems Magazine. This offer is available only to active 2002 IEEE members and expires 1 August 2002. to find out more, visit http://www.ieee-cas.org. Contribute to the Digital Library Network for Engineering and TechnologyAssist with your colleagues' professional development. Contribute your online educational materials any engineering field and discipline to The Digital Library Network for Engineering and Technology (DLNET), a project funded by NSF and hosted at Virginia Tech. Educational materials (called learning objects) include MS Word files of course modules, PowerPoint presentations, applets, video clips, graphs, and illustrations. IEEE is willing to create the metadata record of your learning objects and submit it to DLNET. Or contribute yourself by following the guidelines at http://www.dlnet.vt.edu. Designed to complement engineering and technology education as well as to facilitate lifelong-learning, these learning objects will be accessible to the public at no cost. Currently only those collections and contents without copyright restrictions will be accepted for hosting at DLNET. Find out more on how to contribute through IEEE by contacting: Peter Wiesner, Ed.D., IEEE Educational Activities, p.wiesner@ieee.org. Nominate a Senior Member Initiative Continued for 2002With 1,515 elevations in 2001, the Nominate a Senior Member Initiative (NSI) surpassed its goal of 1,500 new Senior Members. This program pays Sections and Societies with cash awards for successfully nominating Senior Member candidates. Last year the Electron Devices Society (EDS) used the program to earn US$1,250 by sucessfully nominating 125 EDS members to IEEE Senior Member grade. The NSI program is being continued for 2002 - with a new “stretch” goal of elevating 1,750 new Senior Members. Region 7 has a goal of 70 new members. For more details on the NSI program and SM goal chart updates for 2002, see http://www.ieee.org/ra/md/smprogram.html. Upcoming Events
