IEEE Membership total is highest ever

IEEE membership for December year-end totaled 352,259, and increase of 5.2% over December 1998.  This is the highest IEEE membership total ever achieved. Student membership also peaked at 53,270 for a record total.  This surpasses the previous student membership high of 52,681 previous set in 1988. Student membership outside of the United States now accounts for 55% of all IEEE Student membership. The three fastest growing Regions were 10 (17.8), 9 (12.3%) and 8 (10.8%). They set the pace for membership growth outside of the US at an average of 12.4%, well ahead of the 1.7% growth rate achieved in the US. The good news was membership grew in all ten IEEE Regions during 1999. 65% of IEEE members now reside in the US while 35% of the membership reside outside of the US. Senior Member elections surged in 1999 for an annual increase of 578 (or 2.27 %) to total 26,017 Senior Members.

Society membership totaled 398,029 an annual increase of 2.7% or 10,553 over December 1998. The five IEEE Societies with the fastest rates of growth in 1999 were:

IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques

12.0 %
IEEE Communications 10.5 %
IEEE Solid-state Circuits 8.0 %
IEEE Laser and Electro-Optics 6.2 %
IEEE Computer 4.2 %

While these Societies showed the strongest membership growth in 1999 overall, 20 IEEE Societies declined in membership while 16 Societies showed member growth.

IEEE launches new online store & catalog

The IEEE has taken a major leap forward in its ongoing objective to "do business electronically" with the launch of the new IEEE Online Store & Catalog. The site went live 28 Dec, at http://www.ieee.org/ieeestore.  The definitive source for IEEE products, the Store is fully searchable and sells IEEE books, conference proceedings, subscriptions, Standards, mixed-media products and merchandise in a secure environment. It includes such value-added e-commerce features as shopping lists and a help desk. A kickoff promotion offers a free IEEE shirt with every book purchase. For more information, contact Terry Burns, Sales & Marketing, at t.burns@ieee.org

Online Courses

The IEEE together with Stevens Institute of Technology will offer IEEE members graduate credit and a graduate certificate in Wireless Communications after successful completion of four online courses:

  • Wireless Systems Overview
  • Physical Design of Wireless Communication Systems
  • High-Level Design of Wireless Communication Systems

Classes begin this month and run through May. For more information, contact Alan Trembly, IEEE Educational Activities, at a.tremblay@ieee.org or call (732) 562-5488.

Unlock Management Secrets with MBA PowerPakTM

Following the success of the 1999 sessions, the IEEE and Global Resources, a global management training and consulting firm, will continue to offer MBA PowerPakTM to IEEE members at a special 10% discount. In addition if you sign up now - for any session held this year - you will be charged at the 1999 price, a savings of $900 over the 2000 pricing which goes into effect as of February 21.

Participants who attend the eight-day, two-part program are eligible to receive 6.3 IEEE Continuing Education Units (CEUs).

MBA PowerPakTM is designed for technical/scientific managers who are working across and between business functions and organizations; middle and high-performance junior level managers who are interfacing with all management levels; and managers who want to expand their business knowledge and are seeking a useful toolkit of skills and resources. The program offers instruction in the most critical MBA disciplines, including Business Strategy and Planning, Marketing in a Global Economy, Mastering Financial Analysis, and Managing in the New Millennium.

MBA PowerPakTM will be offered 8 times in 2000:

Somerset, NJ Feb 29-Mar 3 and Mar 28-31
Chicago (Lisle, IL) Mar 14-17 and Apr 11-14

Many of the nation's leading corporations including AT&T, Johnson and Johnson, Loral Skynet, and Lucent Technologies have enrolled their employees in MBA PowerPakTM. "The program prepares the manager for the innovative business environment and the challenges and technologies of the New Millennium," says Global Resources President Diane Landau. "Accelerating rates of technological change, new forms of competition, and complex social forces are just some of the business issues that Global Resources and the IEEE foresee in the landscape of business in the twenty-first century."

MBA PowerPakTM's content structure is modeled from the course curriculums of the top MBA programs in the U.S. All MBA PowerPakTM instructors have advanced degrees in addition to their minimum fifteen years of high-technology business and overseas field experience. In the classroom, the instructors blend traditional academic models with case studies and examples.

To register or obtain additional information regarding the course curriculum, training staff, scheduling, and pricing, managers are encouraged to visit the MBA PowerPakTM Website at http://www.MBAPowerPak.com, or call the MBA PowerPakTM Registration Center at 1-877-GRTRAIN (1-877-478-7246).
