News of InterestIEEE Membership total is highest everIEEE membership for December year-end totaled 352,259, and increase of 5.2% over December 1998. This is the highest IEEE membership total ever achieved. Student membership also peaked at 53,270 for a record total. This surpasses the previous student membership high of 52,681 previous set in 1988. Student membership outside of the United States now accounts for 55% of all IEEE Student membership. The three fastest growing Regions were 10 (17.8), 9 (12.3%) and 8 (10.8%). They set the pace for membership growth outside of the US at an average of 12.4%, well ahead of the 1.7% growth rate achieved in the US. The good news was membership grew in all ten IEEE Regions during 1999. 65% of IEEE members now reside in the US while 35% of the membership reside outside of the US. Senior Member elections surged in 1999 for an annual increase of 578 (or 2.27 %) to total 26,017 Senior Members. Society membership totaled 398,029 an annual increase of 2.7% or 10,553 over December 1998. The five IEEE Societies with the fastest rates of growth in 1999 were:
While these Societies showed the strongest membership growth in 1999 overall, 20 IEEE Societies declined in membership while 16 Societies showed member growth. IEEE launches new online store & catalogThe IEEE has taken a major leap forward in its ongoing objective to "do business electronically" with the launch of the new IEEE Online Store & Catalog. The site went live 28 Dec, at http://www.ieee.org/ieeestore. The definitive source for IEEE products, the Store is fully searchable and sells IEEE books, conference proceedings, subscriptions, Standards, mixed-media products and merchandise in a secure environment. It includes such value-added e-commerce features as shopping lists and a help desk. A kickoff promotion offers a free IEEE shirt with every book purchase.
